Charlotte Smith, author of Dreaming of Dior and Australian artist Penelope Leonard have come together with their love of fashion and textiles to establish The Fashion & Textile Gallery.

The Fashion & Textile Gallery aims to be a centre of excellence for the Fashion Industry, an education facility for emerging designers, dressmaking enthusiasts and an exciting place to visit for the public, or anyone interested in fashion and fashion history.

The Fashion and Textile Gallery aims to nurture the creative spirit through exhibitions, lectures, practical classes and functions.

The Darnell Collection, recognised as the country’s most significant private clothing collection, is an exceptional resource permanently housed in the Fashion & Textile Gallery now open to the public. The opportunity to study at leisure the exquisite historical garments and accessories included in the 5500 piece collection is unparalleled.

The Darnell Collection’s curator and collector Charlotte Smith in conjunction with the Gallery Director Penelope Leonard will present an annual themed program of specialised exhibitions and seminars.

As well as the permanent display of items from Darnell collection, The Fashion & Textile Gallery will also feature exhibitions of artists and designers of significance to the fashion industry and artistic community in general.

The Sewing Room

Inline Image

The Sewing Room @ the Fashion & Textile Gallery offers sewing and design classes catering to all levels from the complete novice to the relative expert, guided by experienced highly qualified instructors in one-off sessions or short courses held on weekdays, evenings and weekends.

Learn to make a summer dress, re-fashion something you own, learn the skills to put finishing touches on your designs or start from scratch with how to read a pattern. The Sewing Room offers classes for beginners right through to project based courses.

Sewing Class I introduces beginners to the sewing machine, while Sewing Class II covers zippers, castings and buttonholes. There is even a sewing class specially designed for guys who want to learn to sew a button on and to alter the length of their jeans. There are more advanced classes in creating a tailored jacket and sewing those difficult evening wear fabrics.

You can come to a class to develop your fashion design skills, make your own patterns with our introduction to pattern making classes or simply learn how to change a pattern to fit you properly. We have classes that relate to all areas of fashion design, fashion history, fashion drawing, colour, textile manipulation and fabrication, photography and computer design. Class sizes are small so that everyone can benefit from personal attention.
